Aptera Motors Disappoints Buyers

By Geoff Cummings

It was only back in July of 2009 I wrote about a car which was to revolutionize motoring, a car which would represent much of what is good about advanced technology - the Aptera 2e.

Now, the dreams of many have been shattered as lack of communication and a failure to meet production times have resulted in rock-bottom confidence in Aptera Motors.

A lot of members on the unofficial Aptera Forum have been complaining about the fact that no one is being told what`s going on inside the company. What is known, however, is that the company has let some of its workers go. Aptera`s chief marketing officer, Marques McCammon, is reported to have stated that the reduction in personnel at the company was down to the need to cut costs, and that all efforts were being put in to the ultimate production of the new electric car.

The amazing thing is that Aptera are still offering early places for would-be buyers on their site. A deposit of $500 can be made by prospective buyers residing in the State of California. And, at the same time they still say this - "2e
Available in 2009, this all-electric model will give you over 100 miles per charge (300mpg)."

Well, that didn`t come about, and now, naturally, many disappointed drivers who took the plunge and sent in their $500 are wanting their deposits back. Reading the forums many are angry that their confidence in this company has been misplaced, and they feel cheated. Fortunately, those who have asked for their deposits back aren`t having to wait too long for refunds.

A 3-wheeled car with futuristic styling, good looks, nice features, and an electric motor which would have cut down drastically on CO emissions, and reduced running costs, could have been the trendsetter in green travel. Now, other manufacturers will have to fill the void.

Aptera is in a state of confusion, it has surely left its customers confused. Perhaps it will go out of business, or possibly be taken over by another company. Either way it`s hard to see how the company can continue in its present form.

Contributor's Note

I don`t live in the US, so am not involved in any attempt to purchase one of the Aptera cars. I`m just an interested bystander who has observed the elation then dejection of would-be Aptera customers over the past few months.

We can only hope that the American automakers will seperate themselves from their bedfellow oil companies and produce alternative fuel cars that will help to save our world.
Keep up the good intels.

CONTRIBUTOR'S REPLY

Thanks for your comments Frederick and Nick. Yes, I agree the car has some nice lines, and apparently was a real show-stopper when it was paraded through through the streets. One thing`s for sure, we can`t rely on oil forever.
