Barbecues A Washout in Britain

By Geoff Cummings

My brother and sister in law have lived in Spain for the past six years. They owned a villa in a place called Rojales, which is just inland from Guardamar del Segura on the southern Costa Blanca, Spain.

I used to travel over several times a year with my daughter, and in the summer we`d all have a barbecue or two and sometimes my brother`s friends would come over and have a share in it.

The great thing about the Spanish weather is that in the summer months if we said, say, that three days later we`d have a barbecue then that would almost invariably happen. The warm dry weather was almost guaranteed, so it was pretty easy to plan ahead.

As my brother and his wife are both now over sixty years old, they decided that due to the uncertain health care they felt they would receive in Spain they would return home to England. So, they bought a bungalow in Staffordshire, and moved in about the beginning of 2009. The weather of course is so very different here to what they were used to in Rojales, but at least they feel more secure.

When I went to visit them recently they said that they`d seen a barbecue set at half price for around £50. But, with the poor weather we`ve been having recently in the UK they`d decided against buying one. Why spend money on something that they might or might not make any use of? Unfortunately, I had to agree.

Anyway, we are all hoping to travel to the area in Spain where they once lived in the next month or two, and have a week`s break there. You never know, we might get around to having a barbecue over there-weather permitting of course.

It's all part of the "joy" of the English summer isn't it - sometimes it only lasts a few days. Barbecues are also expensive over here compared with the USA. Over there I could buy a low end gas barbecue for $20 (15pounds), which is a lot easier if the weather isn't perfect - it heats up and cools down in minutes. If you have been used to having a cookout in Spain, it's depressing to come home and not be able to guarantee one.

Yes, it`s funny how things work out. Last summer the meteorological office forecast the `Barbecue Britain` which needless to say didn`t work out. This winter they said it would be a mild one, yet it`s proving the longest cold `snap` for over 30 years. I doubt I`d buy a bbq here, just no guarantee to the weather like there tends to be in Spain during their summers.

Yesterday they were forecasting 12 inches of snow for us, yet we only got an inch. It was also supposed to be -2C or worse this morning, yet I went out to scrape the ice off the car and everything was melting.

Despite the updates in technology, the forecasting doesn't get any better does it.

-2 C in Worcestershire, the lake frozen solid and snow up to your shins. That's more like cold weather, I might break out the skis and take a run down Breedon Hill into the Avon! :)

Geoff, I have decided to have a look at some intels you wrote in earlier days. This one is so interesting. I have never been to Spain. We have unpredictable weather here. Nobody ever believes the weather reports. If we want to know what the weather is like, we just look out the window on that day ... then we know. There is no long-term planning. We always have to have a contingency plan in place.
Eastern Canada is having blizzards as I write this.
