Parenting Is Getting Harder

By Geoff Cummings

I have three children all now aged over twenty.

Bringing children up has never been easy, what with childhood illnesses, schooling, adolescence, their getting a job and so on. But, I really don`t think I would like to be bringing young children up in these days.

I just think the pressures brought to bear on families nowadays is a lot to handle. Peer pressure they face at school, drugs, alcohol abuse, low morals, the going along with the crowd. The lack of respect for the police, teachers, and other authority figures. Yes, it has to a certain extent always been that way, but without question it is getting worse.

I see a lack of discipline by parents who allow their young ones to get away with virtually anything. Kids in the stores yelling and screaming, and the parents having little contol over them. I see a rise in crime among the youth, where knives and guns are being used.

Of course not all children are like that. Many are a credit to their families, and fit in very well with the rest of society. And, sometimes they get an undeserved bad press. Politicians and other leaders don`t always give a good lead and sometimes set poor examples as role models. But, where it matters most, in the home, the computer and the TV have taken over the roles of some parents in spending quality time with their kids.

Many parents have less time to spend with their children due to the economic situation, having to work more to make ends meet. Children often look for guidance from others, rather than their parents, and good behaviour is being pushed to one side.

No, for me being a parent of young children was fine back in the 1970`s through the 1990`s, but I`m really not sure that if I was young again I`d like to go through it all now in the times we live in.

For these very reasons there are many young married people who are not having children now. The world conditions have become increasingly more dangerous and many "good" children are being corrupted by T.V.,etc. etc. as you mentioned. I believe as you do. I would not want to be raising young ones now either.
