What I like About Spain

By Geoffrey Cummings

I remember a number of years ago when Spain`s currency was still the peseta that I swore I`d never go back there again.

Nothing against the country, but I`d been to most the Costas, and the Spanish islands, seen a lot of lager louts, and generally got fed up with the place. After all, it`s a big world, and there are a lot more places to see.

Well, I still think there are a lot more countries I`d like to go visit. But, over the past few years I`ve seen a side to Spain I rather enjoy, courtesy of my brother.

You see, he and his wife moved from the UK to Spain about six years ago. They had enough of the weather in the UK, and as they were retired they decided on a move to Spain.

The great thing is they relocated in a town a little inland from the coast, in a place called Rojales Hills, about 30 kms away from Alicante. They bought a villa (well, it was to be constructed), whilst they rented an apartment for 12 months.

Once they were settled in to their new property I was invited to go and stay with them, and sample elements of Spain I hadn`t up till then really got to know. And go I did, year after year. I took advantage of the low cost flights which helped keep costs down.

I got to go to Chinese restaurants where a 3 course meal would set me back the equivalent of £5, which included half a bottle of wine and a liqueur at the end. We ate at tapas bars, Italian restaurants, British bars, Spanish restaurants and many more.

I got to look around historic houses set out in the country where the ordinary tourist would never venture, off the usual tourist beaten track.

We`d watch flamenco dancing in the local bars. We`d enjoy the fiestas with all the razzmatazz that goes with it in a terrific carnival atmosphere, with fireworks going off in to the early hours of the morning.

And for those of us who do not want to be among the unruly intoxicated youth who spend most of their time it seems on getting drunk, I found a lovely beach and town at a place called Guardamar.

We were able to walk along the front very late at night, everyone behaving themselves. There were the old and the young mixing happily, eating and drinking at the cafes set along the mile or so stretch. There were always families made up of several generations from grand parents to grand children all enjoying themselves in a relaxed way. Guardamar is a place frequented by the Spanish themselves which is always a good sign.

Without question the visits I made to see my brother were the best holidays I`ve had. Living with a family helps in getting to know the area. My family knew the nicest places to go to, and of course where to avoid. And when we wanted to we would have a barbecue, usually safe in the knowledge the weather would be fine.

Although the introduction of the Euro in Spain did seem to raise prices it is still relatively cheap to go there on holiday.

Great intel! Makes a person think twice about going to Spain. We're having a lot of rain here this year. No need to irrigate the hay field and the first crop has been bailed in a few days of sunshine between the rainy days. Yes, warmer weather in Spain does sound appealing!

Thanks for your comment Laraine. I used to enjoy going over to visit my brother, but can no longer do so as he and his wife have come back to the UK to live. We did get to know quite a few of the interesting places out there with going over so mnay times. Unfortunately in Britain we do tend to get a lot of rain, and cold, and ...! Oh well, mustn't go on, other than to say I'm hoping to be able to go to Spain in September for a holiday with my daughter and my brother and sister-in-law. I just love the warm weather so much.
